The man convicted of bringing a gun to the Broward County Courthouse who collapsed during a court appearance last month after drinking a bottle of water he claimed was poison was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday.
Marin Stroia, 60, will serve one year of community control and two years' probation following his prison term, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Stroia was found guilty last month of armed trespass and reckless display of a weapon in the Jan. 14, 2011 incident at the courthouse in Fort Lauderdale.
Distraught over his divorce proceedings, an armed Stroia barged into the courthouse through an exit door, sat down in the lobby and pointed the gun at his chest, threatening to kill himself, police said.
Stroia had to be talked out of shooting himself by retired Judge Joel Lazarus, who spoke with Stroia for 15 minutes before he was taken into custody.
The more bizarre incident happened last month, after a jury found Stroia guilty. Shortly after the verdict was handed down, Stroia pulled out an aspirin bottle and drank a liquid, telling a courtroom official it was poison.
As Stroia was being escorted to have his fingerprints taken, he collapsed and had to be taken from the courtroom on a stretcher by paramedics.
The liquid was later found to have been water.
