Marlins and Yankees to Play Two-Game Legend Series in Panama

The Marlins and Yankees will play a two-game series in Panama this March

A day after Derek Jeter announced he will retire, Major League Baseball announced Thursday that the Marlins and Yankees will play a two-game series in Panama entitled the "Legend Series" this March.

The series will honor Panama native Mariano Rivera who retired following last season and will take place from March 15-16 according to a release from MLB.com. These exhibition games will be the first MLB games in Panama since 1947.

"As long as I can remember, it has been my dream to bring my team, the Yankees, to play baseball in Panama. I am very grateful to Major League Baseball, the Players Association, the Yankees and the Marlins in making this dream become a reality," Rivera said in the press release.

Exhibition series between the Yankees and Marlins have happened in the past with the most recent in 2012 when Marlins Park hosted the games. Those were the first MLB games in the park's history following two exhibitions against college opponents for Miami. The two teams also had a two-game exhibition series in 2008 at the former home of the Marlins which was known as Dolphin Stadium at the time.

"It is only fitting that one of our game's greatest ambassadors, Mariano Rivera, could help us bring Major League Baseball back to his beloved Panama," said Paul Archey, Senior Vice President, International Business Operations for Major League Baseball, in the relelase.

In addition to the two games, there will be a gala featuring both teams on March 14th to benefit the Mariano Rivera Foundation. Proceeds will also go to Children's Hospital in Panama City.
