Tropical Storm Melissa Forms Over Atlantic

Melissa’s general motion was expected to continue during the next couple of days, the National Hurricane Center said.

Melissa was racing east-northeast over the northeastern Atlantic Ocean Wednesday night after it acquired tropical storm status earlier in the day, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

At 11 p.m., the storm was moving at 30 miles per hour about 820 miles west of the Azores. Melissa had maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour.

Melissa’s general motion was expected to continue through Thursday night, before a turn to the east on Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Melissa is expected to lose tropical characteristics during the next 24 hours.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
