Last week's resignation of State Rep. Richard Steinberg could open the door for an openly gay state legislator to win office for the first time in Florida history.
Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora, who is openly gay, said he might run for seat in the State House, according to the Miami Herald.
Gongora's opportunity came after Steinberg resigned Friday over inappropriate text messages he sent to a married assistant U.S. attorney.
“It would be a historic moment for the state of Florida and an important step towards breaking down the glass ceiling in regards to LGBT candidates," Gongora told the Herald.
Steinberg's District 106, which is being redrawn, is among the most liberal in the state and includes a large gay population.
"We have never had the opportunity that this new district presents for the LGBT community," said C.J. Ortuño, executive director of anti-discrimination group SAVE Dade.
Miami Beach Commissioner Jonah Wolfson said he's also filing papers to run for the seat.
