Miami-Dade Cop Shoots Suspect After Chase

Detective opens fire on man following car and foot chase

A suspect who led Miami-Dade detectives on a car and brief foot chase was shot by officers Thursday night, police said.

The incident began around 9:15 p.m. when detectives with the Miami-Dade Police's Tactical Narcotics Team saw a car driving erratically in the area of Northeast 79th Street and 2nd Avenue, Miami-Dade Police spokesman Roy Rutland said.

When the detectives stopped the car and began to approach it, the driver, identified as 34-year-old Johnny A. Outler, suddenly accelerated, nearly hitting the detectives, Rutland said.

Police say Outler fled northbound on I-95, where he side-swiped an unmarked Miami-Dade Police car. He bailed out of the car after he lost control and slammed into the center median near Ives Dairy Road, Rutland said.

Outler fled into a wooded area before one of the detectives opened fire following a confrontation, hitting him in the lower abdomen, Rutland said.

Outler was taken to a nearby hospital where he was in stable condition. None of the detectives were injured.

Police haven't said said whether or not he was armed. He's facing charges of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing.
