Officer Out of Hospital After Being Shot in Exchange of Gunfire With Suspect

The officer was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition while the subject was transported in critical condition.

An officer was recovering Monday after being shot in an exchange of fire with a suspect over the weekend in Miami Gardens.

Officer Ryan Thompson was out of the hospital and in good spirits, police said.

The incident began when authorities were responding to a disturbance at 2170 NW 183rd Street and 44-year-old Randy Antonio Thomas fled after a fight, police said. He down 183rd Street, but he had a weapon with him, and there was an exchange of gunfire, according to officials.

Thompson and Thomas were struck.Both were taken to Ryder Trauma Center.

Some witnesses said the officer got help right away while the suspect just lay on the ground.

"He was just on the ground bleeding out of his head, rolling around, screaming, crying for help," a witness named Lucky Jay said.

Thomas faces charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
