Miami Man Gets 5 Years Behind Bars in Military Laptop Thefts

Leader of groups of thieves who stole $7.4 million in computers sentenced

A Miami man has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison after authorities say he led a group of thieves who stole $7.4 million in military laptop computers.

Authorities said Rolando Coca Alvarez and a group of thieves rappelled into a southwest Florida warehouse and swiped the computers in 2010. The computers did not contain sensitive information.

The men escaped, but were arrested months later thanks to the help of surveillance video from a fast food drive through.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Alvarez pleaded guilty to a count of theft of government property. During Tuesday's sentencing, Alvarez was also ordered to pay $2.8 million in restitution.
