Miami Police Using “Santa's Helpers” to Fight Crime for the Holidays

City of Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa and Mayor Tomas Regelado announced Monday that residents will see extra security throughout the city during the holidays.

In order for shoppers to stay safe this holiday season the City of Miami is stepping up their forces with a new "Santa's Helpers" strategy.

City of Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa and Mayor Tomas Regelado announced Monday that residents will see extra security throughout the city during the holidays.

"Everywhere from Northwest 7th Avenue and 62nd street all the way down to Coconut Grove we will be providing extra security for Holiday seasons," Orosa said at Monday's news conference.

Orosa said the department is targeting 16 shopping areas, adding an extra 37 officers to patrol those areas where police say shoppers are most vulnerable.

"The same way you're out there shopping, we have someone out there shopping for your purses and your cash.”

Orosa said in addition to the officers, there are some things shoppers can do to help prevent holiday theft.

“Stay alert, make sure you are aware of your surroundings, make sure when you leave a department store, you put your purchases in the trunk instead of the back seat," he said. "Take credit cards, don’t show your cash around."

Officials said sadly, it’s a fact that theft goes up during the holidays. But they’re doing everything they can to make sure shoppers are safe.

"From Liberty City to Coconut Grove, from the Central Shopping Plaza to downtown Miami will mean not only will the people be safe but they will feel safe," Regalado said.
