Miramar Man Convicted of Father's Stabbing Death

Jurors rejected Kendrick Herring's insanity claim and found him guilty of fatally stabbing his dad in the eyes

A Miramar man was convicted Monday of killing his own father in 2007 by stabbing him in the eyes, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Kendrick Herring, 28, had admitted to the slaying, but his counsel argued that he had been legally insane at the time.

Though he has been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, Herring could only be acquited by insanity under Florida law if his mental illness prevented him from determining right from wrong.

Prosecutors alleged that Herring was angry with his father before striking him and stabbing him repeatedly in the family's kitchen, and that drugs, rather than mental illness, contributed to his actions.

Jurors deliberating for eight hours over two days before deciding Herring was guilty. Florida law requires that he be sentenced to life in prison, though Herring's attorney suggested he will appeal the verdict.
