Most Broward Cities Prohibit Salvation Army Drop Boxes

Six drop off boxes sit unused, costing $1,300 apiece.

When Maj. Henry Hudson of the Salvation Army tried to boost holiday donations by spreading out those familiar drop boxes across Broward County he ran into a considerable roadblock. The boxes were not allowed.

"I thought they would be welcome," Hudson said.

No Broward cities permit the drop boxes, with the exception of Davie. Some city officials interviewed by NBC Miami said they fear clothing donations will overflow - leaving a mess outside the boxes creating an eyesore.

Chaz Adams with the city of Fort Lauderdale said, "These types of outdoor accessories are not a permitted use under the City's current code.  An ordinance change would be required in order for them to be permitted."

The same goes for the city of Plantation and most others in Broward County.

"We're trying to do it the right way and want them to approve it," Major Hudson said.

As for concerns that the boxes would overflow with donations, the major assured city officials that would not happen. "We will check the boxes every day to make sure they are clean."

He said Davie officials are leaving the decision up to the property owner. Nova Southeastern University has two. Currently, six of the donation drop boxes sit not being used, costing the charity $1,300 apiece.

Individuals wanting to make a small donation in Broward County not near one of the Davie sites will have to bring their items to a Salvation Army donation center.
