Mother Of Fugitive Boynton Beach Cop Gets 1 Year Behind Bars

Mother who helped cop son flee to Brazil sentenced to one year in prison

A South Florida woman has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for helping her police officer son flee to Brazil to escape federal drug charges.

A federal judge sentenced 51-year-old Janiber Vieira on Monday. She pleaded guilty last month to conspiracy to help former Boynton Beach officer David Britto flee the country. Vieira could have faced up to five years behind bars.

Britto cut off an electronic ankle monitor and flew to Brazil in August with his mother's help before his trial was to begin. Britto has pleaded not guilty to involvement in methamphetamine trafficking.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that Britto was Boynton Beach's officer of the year in 2010 and is a former Marine. He was fired after fleeing prosecution.
