The state’s emergency management officials and Miami-Dade County have teamed up to help homeowners who have filed repetitive flood claims prevent future incidents.
About 3,500 homeowners in the county have filed repetitive flood claims and may be eligible for federal funding to prevent more losses in the future, officials said.
Through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Flood Mitigation Assistance, Repetitive Flood Claims and Severe Repetitive Loss programs, owners can get funding to elevate their home or to move. Other less costly measures include creating culverts, retention ponds and landscaping berms.
Next week, officials will hold town hall meetings to discuss how homeowners can become eligible and get funding. On Aug. 15, the meeting will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Town of Cutler Bay Council Chambers, another meeting will be held on Aug. 17 at the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Auditorium in Doral from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
