PAC Files Petition for Miami-Dade Commission Term Limits

Group wants two four-year term limits for county commissioners

Days after Miami-Dade voters rejected a question to amend a county charter that would give commissioners term limits and a pay raise, a local political action committee is filing a petition Thursday calling for those term limits.

Miami Voice Chair Vanessa Brito and vice chair Ivette Taylor submitted the petition at Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts, which will have to approve the petition form before signatures can be collected.

The petition calls for a maximum of two four-year terms and will need 120,000 signatures to get it on the ballot.

The ballot initiative was voted down by voters on Jan. 31 by a 54-46 percent margin, mostly because of the pay raise, which would give commissioners a $92,000 yearly salary.

“Miami-Dade County voters have spoken time and time again," Brito said in a statement. "This is not the first time voters reject the multi-faceted charter amendment. Voters want to vote on changes to the Charter independently of each other, without feeling coerced by confusing and combined language."

The group would have 120 days to collect the signatures and anticipates collecting 150,000.
