Police Chase Ends With Crash, Suspect Dead, Another Injured

Miami-Dade police and Drug Enforcement Administration had been trying to apprehend the suspects

Two brothers, under investigation by a slew of federal and local law enforcement agencies, evaded arrest by fleeing with high-powered weapons in a sports utility vehicle on Tuesday.

But one brother ended up dead and the other in critical condition after a high speed chase with authorities along U.S. 1 in southwest Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade Police were helping the Drug Enforcement Administration try to apprehend the two suspects -- who family members said were brothers -- near Southwest 228th Street and 157 Avenue. The suspects, described as extremely violent, somehow sped away in an Avalanche sports utility vehicle and were pursued by police.

The SUV crashed around U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road and rolled over several times. At some point authorities fired at the suspects.

Both men were airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where one man died and the other was listed in stable condition and was undergoing reconstructive surgery.

Relatives arrived at the hospital quickly and learned that one man had died from numerous gunshot wounds to the chest, while his brother survived with gunshot wounds to the groin area.

Authorities also said federal charges will be filed against the surviving brother in the coming days.

Aerial footage after the crash had showed cars backed up along U.S. 1 for miles.

No other information was immediately available.
