2 Dead After Police-Involved Shooting in Miami

Officer-involved shooting reported in area of Northeast 2nd Avenue and 53rd Street.

Miami Police are investigating after two people were killed during an officer-involved shooting at a barbershop Sunday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. at the barbershop at 5325 Northeast 2nd Avenue, when an officer responded for a dispute between a barbershop employee and a security guard, police said.

Gerson Meises came out to speak with the officer who stood between him and a security guard to try to de-escalate the situation, police said.

The security guard then pulled out his weapon and fired at him. The officer fired at the guard, killing him, police said.

"I just asked what happened and the lady around the corner told me he got shot and the policeman killed the security guard. Another tragedy in Miami man," said Pablo Medina, a customer.

Miami Police Union President Sgt. Javier Ortiz said the officer was injured in the shooting.

"The officer sustained some injuries, but was able to stop the threat and protect the public and other police officers on the scene," Ortiz said in a statement. "The victim who was shot by the suspect is in our prayers. The MPD Officer involved is a hero."
