Port St. Lucie Officer Shot While Responding to Domestic Dispute Scene

SWAT team called to home after officer shot, hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries

A Port St. Lucie Police officer was shot when he responded to a domestic dispute that became a hostage situation late Wednesday night.

The unidentified officer was being treated at a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Port St. Lucie Police spokesman Sgt. Frank Sabol told WPTV.

The incident began shortly after 11 p.m. when officers responded to the home in the 100 block of Southwest Estaugh Avenue.

As officers approached the house, they were met with gunfire and the officer was hit in the leg, Sabol said.

A SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene and a standoff lasted until about 6 a.m. when the man surrendered and was taken into custody.

It was unclear whether other family members were inside the home at the time. Police haven't given the gunman's identity and no other information was immediately known.
