Reality Show BSO Deputy Under Investigation

'Police Women of Broward County' star under investigation for shooting

One of the stars of TLC's "Police Women of Broward County" is the subject of an internal affairs investigation for shooting at an unarmed man during a traffic stop in Pompano Beach.

Deputy Erika Huerta remains on active duty with the Broward Sheriff's Office while an investigation into the Sept. 28 shooting is completed.

"The shooting is under an active Internal Affairs investigation so we can not discuss it at this time," BSO spokesman Jim Lejedal said, in a statement released Wednesday.

According to a report of the incident, Huerta was in the 100 block of Northwest 30th Avenue when she spotted a car with an expired plate being driven by 34-year-old Marcus Rozier.

Huerta turned on her lights and sirens, but Rozier didn't immediately stop and made a turn and started driving slowly before he finally stopped, the report said.

The car had dark tinted windows and three passengers, the report said.

Huerta ordered everyone in the car to put their hands on top of the car, and told Rozier to turn the engine off, the report said.

Rozier complied and put the keys on the ground, as Huerta stood behind the opened door of her car with her gun drawn.

That's when Huerta says she saw Rozier reach into the car and she yelled at him to take them out.

"The driver took his hands out and I observed a dark-colored object in his hand while he simultaneously exited the vehicle and faced me," Huerta wrote in her report.

Huerta said Rozier extended his arm, which led her to believe he had a weapon in his hand and was going to use it against her, the report said.

The report said Huerta fired her weapon in his direction, missing him.

"My initial reaction at that point was to eliminate the threat, which yielded me to fire my weapon at his direction," Huerta wrote.

Rozier was arrested for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer and driving with a suspended license.

The report didn't say whether any weapons were found on Rozier or in the car, though a report in the South Florida Times said no weapon was found.

The incident wasn't captured by the reality show's cameras.

Rozier remains behind bars without bond. His attorney, Gordon Weekes, told the Times that Rozier had a cell phone in his hand and complied with all of Huerta's orders.

"He and his passengers have a different version of what happened compared to the information that’s in her report," Weekes said.
