Rival Celtics Sign Carlos Arroyo

Heat guard released Tuesday will back Rajon Rondo after Delonte West's injury

The Miami Heat are three games behind the rival Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference standings, and now they're also down one intel-laden point guard who can't drive.

The Boston Herald reports the Celtics have signed former Heat player Carlos Arroyo to a veteran minumum contract for the rest of the season.

Arroyo, 31, was released by the Heat Tuesday after a nearly 16-month stint in Miami that spanned three seasons; the team wanted to create a roster spot for veteran guard Mike Bibby, who signed on after being released by the Wizards.

Often the Heat's starting point guard as much by default as skill, Arroyo started 42 games with the Heat and averaged 5.6 points and 2.0 assists this season. Now, he'll back Boston's Rajon Rondo in the absence of an injured Delonte West.

Advantage, Celtics? Maybe: Miami and Boston face off just once more in this regular season, an April 10th meeting in what's currently a 0-3 stain on the Heat's first year as an assembled superpower. Having just handed over a player who's been with them all year certainly won't help the Heat, but then, the Heat might have bigger problems than a 6'2" angry man with a slap-happy left hand.
