Musician Timmy Thomas Honors Memory of Nelson Mandela with His Music

Thomas is working on a remix of “Why Can’t We Live Together” and on a tribute album with proceeds going to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

At his home in Miami Gardens, singer and songwriter Timmy Thomas remembers Nelson Mandela with his 1974 worldwide hit “Why Can’t We Live Together.”

The song earned him a gold record and became an anthem in South Africa.

And Thomas is now working on a remix of “Why Can’t We Live Together” and on a tribute album with proceeds going to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Thomas said he remembers when he was performing in South Africa in 1994 and Mandela became South Africa’s first black president.

“I was there during the time they were voting,” Thomas said. “Every five minutes I heard my record.”

Thomas said he remembers shaking hands with Mandela and introducing himself to the late president.

“I was so excited when he came out of that hotel, he had a lot of people around him,” Thomas said.
