Sleeping Worker Saved from Miami-Dade Warehouse Fire

Waste Management driver calls 911 after spotting smoke

A sleeping worker at a Southwest Miami-Dade warehouse was saved by a Waste Management driver Wednesday morning when the driver spotted smoke coming from a fire in one of the warehouse's buildings.

Osnel Hernandez was servicing an industrial warehouse at 13240 Southwest 131st Street when he spotted the smoke and quickly called 911.

Miami-Dade Fire personnel responded and were able to get the sleeping worker to safety as crews extinguished the flames.

"Our national Waste Watch program, which we launched in Miami-Dade County just three months ago, prepares our drivers to be an extra set of eyes and ears for local police, fire departments and emergency services in our communities," Dawn McCormick, Community Affairs Manager for Waste Management, said in a statement. "Osnel Hernandez was trained in the program and did exactly the right thing in being aware of his surroundings and alerting emergency personnel to the smoke and fire. We are very proud of his actions and pleased that he was in the right place at the right time to prevent a tragedy."
