Some Weapons Stolen From Monroe County Sheriff's Office Sergeant's Patrol Car Recovered

Handguns still missing, no suspects in custody: Authorities

Some of the weapons and SWAT gear stolen from a Monroe County Sheriff's Office sergeant's patrol car have been recovered and one man is in custody but two handguns are still missing, authorities said Wednesday.

An automatic rifle, ammunition and special weapons and tactical gear were recovered overnight, the MCSO said.

Two handguns - a Glock .40 caliber and a Glock .45 caliber - are still missing.

The guns were found after a woman called Crime Stoppers to tell them 17-year-old Kalvin Cowger had shown her a bag with the stolen items inside, the MCSO said.

Cowger told the woman he traded the items to a man in Big Pine Key for pills and when detectives searched the man's house, they found the rife, ammo and gear, authorities said.

The man confirmed he received the items from Cowger but said he didn't know they were stolen, authorities said.

The sergeant's car was burglarized sometime early Tuesday in front of his house on Big Pine Key, authorities said. The belongings were stolen from the inside of the car and the vehicle’s trunk, but it is unknown how the suspect gained access.

Cowger was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and theft, and more charges and arrests may be pending.

Authorities said Cowger denied knowing anything about the burglary or stolen items.

Anyone with info on the missing guns is asked to call the sheriff's office at 305-289-2351.
