Suspicious Envelope with White Powder Sent to Rep. Joe Garcia's Key West Office

The FBI removed the envelope and is currently investigating.

A suspicious envelope containing white powder was delivered to Rep. Joe Garcia’s Key West office Wednesday nmorning.

The FBI and the local authorities were investigating the envelope.

The envelope’s return address read “Tea Party” but Key West Police said it was not a threat.

“Whether this is a hoax or a legitimate threat, this is a serious matter and should be treated as such. Such scare tactics targeted against any elected official, or public servant, will not deter us from serving our constituents, as we will not be intimidated by these cowardly acts," Garcia said in a statement.

The building was closed Wednesday and is expected to reopen Thursday. Although only one person woks in Garcia’s office, the building was evacuated, and people were instructed to wash their clothes and bodies.

"We had a lockdown and people were decontaminated as they left the post office,” Alyson Crean, spokeswoman for the Key West Police Department told the newspaper. “We did not feel that level of a threat with this package.”
