Biden's Brother ‘Fine' After Contact with Suspicious Powder Mailed to South Florida Home

Vice President's brother said manila envelope containing white powder was sent to his Ocean Ridge home from India

Vice President Joe Biden's brother was hospitalized in Boynton Beach overnight after a white powder from a suspicious package delivered by mail to his home spilled onto his skin, he told the Palm Beach Post

The manila envelope was addressed to lobbyist Francis Biden's Ocean Ridge home from India, he said.

The younger Biden, 57, told the Post that his girlfriend Mindy carried the package inside from the mailbox, but only he came in contact with its contents after opening it on Saturday.

Both were rushed to Bethesda Memorial Hospital as a precaution while hazmat crews and multiple agencies investigated the powder and the package in which it was delivered, reported NBC affiliate WPTV.

Neighbors on Ridge Boulevard were evacuated and the street closed for several hours.

"We had the United States Postal Service investigating, the FBI investigating, obviously," said Boynton Beach Fire Rescue spokesman Steve Lewis, who confirmed to WPTV that the package was delivered by USPS.

After being discharged Sunday morning, Biden told media his girlfriend was released from Bethesda Saturday night, while he was kept for observation.

"I was the only one who came in contact with the powder so they kept me," he told the Post. "I'm fine."

FBI spokesman Michael Leverock said Saturday night that preliminary tests indicated the contents of the package "were deemed not to be threatening in nature."

Biden declined to reveal what else was in the package.

Because he is a registered lobbyist in the state, his home address is readily available on the official website of the Florida legislature.
