Trooper Injured, Suspect Killed in N. Florida Shooting

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper is recovering after being shot in the head during a foot chase in north Florida.

The FHP says Trooper Lawrence Andrew Litzell was in stable condition Sunday evening at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

The Gainesville Sun reports Litzell was shot in the face during a confrontation with 24-year-old Somourian Jamal Wingo and another suspect in Palatka. Wingo was killed in the shooting. Authorities are looking for the second suspect.

FHP says Litzell pulled over a car early Saturday. Wingo and the other man got out of the car and started to run. Litzell ran after Wingo and was shot in the face. He managed to return fire, killing Wingo.

Litzell will be on administrative leave pending an investigation.
