U-Haul Thieves Caught After Police Chase Ends in Deerfield Beach

Trio who stole from construction site taken into custody: Police

Authorities say three men who stole a U-Haul truck loaded with construction equipment from Davie led police on a chase into Deerfield Beach where they were captured after they bailed out and tried to flee on foot early Wednesday.

Authorities said they received a call around 2 a.m. that the men were loading re-bar and construction equipment into the U-Haul truck in the area of State Road 84 and Hiatus Road in Davie.

Officers responded and a chase involving the Florida Highway Patrol and Broward Sheriff's Office ensued eastbound on I-595 and onto I-95 northbound.

The suspects got off at Hillsboro Boulevard and eventually bailed out of the U-Haul in the front lawn of a Deerfield Beach home.

With the help of a chopper and K-9 units, the suspects were taken into custody. Two were taken to North Broward Medical Center but the extent of their injuries were unknown.

"I was very frightened...I'm just glad everything turned out alright and didn't get any worse," said John Murphy, who lives at the home where the U-Haul was stopped. "I'm glad no one got hurt and I'm glad officers were able to get everything under control."

Police haven't identified any of the suspects.
