Valedictorian Who Avoided Deportation to be Honored by Miami-Dade School Board

Daniela Pelaez honored for creating foundation to help immigrant students

The Miami-Dade County School Board will give special recognition Wednesday to the North Miami Senior High School valedictorian who faced deportation earlier this year.

Daniela Pelaez will be honored by the board for creating the We Are Here Foundation, which helps educate immigrant students about their legal rights and raises funds for scholarships.

In February, an immigration judge ordered the deportation of the 18-year-old and her sister, who were both brought illegally to the United States from Colombia by their parents when they were young children.

After receiving massive support from classmates, the community and lawmakers, Pelaez was granted a waiver that will allow her to stay in the country for two more years.
