Warrant Issued for Driver's Blood Samples in Pregnant Woman's Death

Police want blood samples from woman whose car hit pregnant woman at Fort Lauderdale hotel pool cabana

Fort Lauderdale Police have issued a warrant to collect a blood sample from the driver whose car veered off a road and into a hotel pool cabana, killing a pregnant Massachusetts woman.

Rosa Rivera, 34, hasn't been charged in the March 18 crash that killed 26-year-old Alanna Demella at the Riverside Hotel on East Las Olas Boulevard.

Fort Lauderdale Police spokesman Frank Sousa said Tuesday that issuing the warrant was standard procedure.

Rivera didn't want to comment Tuesday.

According to the warrant, Rivera and her husband had been at a nearby restaurant, where she ordered a martini and an appetizer, but the two got into an argument and she left before finishing both.

Police say Rivera, from Plantation, was driving westbound on Southeast 4th Street when she lost control of her car, drove over a curb and sidewalk and plowed into the cabana.

A witness aid she was going well over the 25 mph speed limit, according to the warrant.

Demella, from Medford, Mass., was inside the cabana with her husband, 31-year-old Michael, when she was struck by Kim's car, police said. They had each gone to the restroom when the car hit the building.

Demella, who was seven months pregnant, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was taken to Broward General Medical Center for minor injuries and later released.

Rivera was also taken to Broward General Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
