Young Boy Killed in Head-On Crash in Homestead

Boy on way to school is killed in violent collision in Homestead

A 5-year-old boy was killed in a violent head-on car crash in Homestead Monday morning.

According to Homestead Police spokesman Fernando Morales, the boy, Jason Santamaria, was being driven to school by his mother's aunt when they were involved in a crash on Campbell Drive near Southwest 152nd Avenue.

Police say another car clipped their vehicle, causing the woman to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.

Santamaria was taken to Miami Children's Hospital, where he later died. His mother's aunt and the driver of another car were also hospitalized and are in critical condition, Morales said.

The young boy was sitting in the front seat with a seat belt, which police said may have been a factor in his death. He likely should have been in a child restraint seat in the rear of the vehicle, police said.

Police haven't identified the drivers involved in the crash.
