The recall of pistachio nuts widened today as snack-makers pulled their products from store shelves while federal officials continued to test for a link between salmonella and the nuts, Reuters reported.

The Food and Drug Administration was conducting genetic testing on pistachio samples to see if there was a connection between salmonella and the nuts, officials said Tuesday.

Frito-Lay recalled unshelled pistachios in the U.S. with sell-by dates between July 14, 2009 and Dec. 29, 2009 as a precaution -- though the company said it had no report of pistachio-related illness, Reuters reported.

The snack division of PepsiCo Inc. is also recalling bagged pistachios in Canada.

Snack-maker John B. Sanfilippo & Son Inc., also announced recalls of its Fisher brand nuts and took bulk packaged and small packaged items of its roasted unshelled pistachios off shelves.

Grocery chain Kroger Co. further recalled Private Selection shelled pistachios.
