Craigslist Suspect to Family: “Forget About Me”

Report claims Markoff is losing hope and told his family to move to California

The alleged Craigslist killer has told his family to "forget about" him -- a statement that suggests the 23-year-old medical student has given up on any chance that he will be vindicated in the crimes he is accused of, The Boston Herald reported.

Philip Markoff told his brother and sister-in-law, "there is more coming out," and that the family should move to California, the Herald reported, citing a jailhouse source. He ended the prison visit with his relatives by telling them to "forget about me."

The revelation comes a day after prison sources said the engaged upstate New York native tried to hang himself with a shoelace. He has since been put on suicide watch and has been forced to wear a protective suit that makes it impossible for him to harm himself, according to the Herald.

Markoff has pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering Upper West Sider Julissa Brisman, who was found dead April 14 in a Boston hotel after being bashed in the head and shot three times.

He is also charged in a robbery of another masseuse that police say he met through the online classifieds site. On Friday, investigators said they found Markoff's fingerprints on a wall of the Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, R.I., where a stripper has said she was assaulted by a man she met through Craigslist. The Boston University medical student also sent text messages from the hotel, law enforcement sources said.

Markoff's parents also visited him at the Boston lockup Friday, along with his lawyer who refused to comment on the accused killer's mental state.

"Philip's brother and sister-in-law both are very happy they had a chance to see him," defense lawyer John Salsberg said. "They love him dearly. They continue to remain very supportive to him."
