SoFla Dem Throws Weight Behind Crist

Liberal Wexler endorses independent Charlie for Senate

Independent Senate candidate Charlie Crist found some new support on the campaign trail Sunday, after former Democratic Congressman Robert Wexler announced his endorsement for the one-time Republican.

A prominent Democrat for several years in South Florida, the 49-year-old Wexler even took time out Sunday to campaign with Crist in Tamarac and Boca Raton.

"Governor Crist, in my humble estimation, has earned our support," said Wexler. "He stood up for voting rights in the state of Florida like no one else, he stood up for a woman's right to choose like no one else, he stood up for a public education system and teachers in this state like no one else, he's earned our support."

Wexler added that Crist's ability to take the best ideas from both Democrats and Republicans will help improve the lives of Florida's working families.

Crist became independent in March and now faces Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Kendrick Meek in the upcoming election.

A native of New York, Wexler represented Florida's 19th district in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms, before retiring earlier this year to run the Washington-based Center for Middle East Peace and economic Cooperation.
