Kids Getting Spoiled at the Spa

Psychiatrists warn pampering could backfire

A simple manicure may seem harmless and sometimes presents a fun day out with mom, but psychiatrists warn getting kids hooked on salon services could backfire.

It could be that peer pressure is driving kids to be better, feel better.  More and more kids are turning to the same salon services as adults including bikini waxes and injections like lip fillers and botox.

"I think you're more confident in yourself and you can talk to people more," one teenager said when asked why she likes to get spa treatments.

The American Society of Plastic Surgery reported a spike of 42% in the number of teens seeking filler injections.

As some younger teens turn to more expensive and invasive procedures like injections or even plastic surgery to get the Hollywood look, parents are urged to pay attention, because ultimately, they have the power of the purse.

"It's important to ask why they're doing it and what they're getting out of it," said child phychiatrist Jennifer Kurth said.
