Multiple sclerosis patients are discovering that their own stem cells can be used to dramatically improve the symptoms of their disease.
Researchers at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine first destroyed the immune systems in 21 patients with MS. They they re-booted the immune systems with the patient's own stem cells. The result was an immune system that aggressively attacked MS.
The results occurred in patients in the early stages of the debilitating disease. It does not appear to work in those with advanced cases of MS. You can read more in the Washington Post.
