First Graders Read for Free Bike Helmets

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo kept a promise he made while reading 'Curious George' to 90 first-graders

Ninety first graders at Spanish Lake Elementary know how to keep a bargain:  Read three books by October 27, and take home a free helmet.

Last month, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo read them a story: Curious George Rides a Bike. Then he promised to bring them bike helmets if they kept turning pages.

Six-year-old Deborah Piard did.

"I gave him a promise that I would read books every day," she explained.

Deborah read books about cows and ill-fated gingerbread men.

"I like reading," she said. "If we read... We are smart."

She picked up a pink, blue and white Barbie helmet.

"I always wanted one like this," she said. "I like all the colors."

Bovo partnered with Walmart, and the store donated the helmets.

He said he'd be back to Spanish Lake to read more stories. Deborah said she's taking her bike and new helmet to the park.
