Auction for Ponzi Schemer's Luxe Machines

Rothstein's cars, boats go up for sale Thursday

Anyone looking to score one of Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein's pricey toys had better have deep pockets.

Rothstein's government-seized cars and watercraft go on the auction block Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale, and they're not for buyers on a budget.

The bidding starts at 11 a.m. at the Broward County Convention Center and includes 10 luxury vehicles and four vessels.

Rothstein, 47, pleaded guilty to running the estimated $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme in January, a couple months after authorities seized his cache of 20 luxury vehicles and four boats.

Of the 20 cars seized, 10 are being auctioned off by Rick Levin and Associates, Inc., on behalf of the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury.

The list of cars sounds like they could have come from the garage of a king: a 2008 Bugatti Veyron, a 2009 Bentley Continental GTC, a 2007 Rolls-Royce Phantom, a 2009 Ferrari 430 Spyder, a 1967 Corvette Convertible, a 2007 Ford Expedition Limo, a 2008 Cadillac Escalade, a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR, a 2009 Maserati GT and a 2010 Lamborghini LP-670SV.

A forfeiture filing released by prosecutors in November claimed Rothstein had not one but four Mercedes in his possession, three Corvettes and two Rolls-Royce.

The four boats include an 87-foot Warren yacht, a 33-foot Riva Aquariva Super, a 55-foot SeaRay Sundancer and a Nor-Tech Supercat.

Some of the proceeds from the auction will go towards paying back the victims of Rothstein's scheme.
