Police say Sgt. Adam Rosenthal was on his way to work around 6:15 a.m. when the car went over a median in a suburban area of West Boca along Southwest 18th St. and Powerline Road.

Video from the scene showed the squad car nearly cut in half and wrapped around the tree.

Rescue crews worked to get Rosenthalr out of the car. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Rosenthal was a 16-year veteran of the force who was highly decorated and ran a youth martial arts program.

He leaves behind a wife and four children.

"He had an amazing sense of humor, he touched many people here," said Sgt. Nicole Guerriero of the Delray Beach Police Department, according to WPTV. "If you needed comfort, he could get it...he was just an amazing person...family man, friend, confidant."
