1 Dead After Car Collides With Historic Theater in Overtown Crash

Investigators have not released the victim’s identity or determined what caused the crash

Miami Police are investigating an early morning crash where a car hit a historic theater and left one person dead.

Officers responded to the scene near Northwest 2nd Avenue and 8th Street in Overtown around 5 a.m., where the car involved could be seen after colliding with the historic Lyric Theater.

Detectives said the driver of a silver 2009 Chevy Cobalt was headed in the northbound direction, lost control and crashed into a pole before hitting the building.

Miami Fire Rescue transported the driver to Ryder Trauma Center, where they were pronounced dead a short time later. Investigators have not released the victim’s identity at this time.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area for much of the morning rush hour as the investigation continues.
