Man Killed in Wrong-Way Wreck on Sawgrass Expressway: FHP

A man is dead following a wrong-way wreck on the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County early Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred during wet, rainy weather north of Wiles Road in Coral Springs. According to Florida Highway Patrol, three cars were involved in the wreck around 5:14 a.m.

One of the cars was heading northbound in the southbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway when it struck a second vehicle head-on.

A third vehicle that tried to avoid the crash hit the second vehicle and ran off the road, hitting a tree, FHP officials said.

The driver of the car that was heading the wrong way was taken to Broward Health North where he was later pronounced dead. He was later identified as 36-year-old Harold Wilson Martinez, of Parkland.

The second driver was seriously injured and remained in critical condition at Broward Health North Wednesday.

The driver of the car that hit the tree wasn't injured.

FHP shut down traffic on the Sawgrass Expressway at Exit 14/Coral ridge for several hours. It has since been reopened to traffic.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
