1 Teen Killed, 1 Critical After Crash on I-95

A 17-year-old Coral Springs High School student was killed and his 16-year-old classmate left critically injured after a crash on I-95 in Palm Beach County early Sunday.

The driver, Steven Hoyos, and his passenger, Steven Komec, were in a 2002 Nissan Sentra that was stopped on I-95 at the Lake Ida Road overpass when they were rear-ended by a 2011 Dodge pickup truck around 6:40 a.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Hoyos, a junior at the school, was rushed to Delray Medical Center where he later died. Komec, a sophomore, remained in critical condition at the hospital.

According to the report, the 35-year-old driver of the truck was unable to avoid the car, which was already disabled in the roadway. The Sentra had front end damage which may have caused it to be disabled, but it's unknown what caused that damage.

At Coral Springs High Monday, Hoyos was remembered by classmates as a talented member of the school's band.

"He was an awesome drummer, at football games he would kill the drums, he was really good," Brianna Roberts said. "Steven, he was a really good friend of mine, I’m going to miss him."

"He’s not going to be here, it just changes us, I can’t believe it," Roddy Cedeno said.

Freshman Pablo Batbaran said Hoyos was a mentor to him.

"During the summer I did a marching band and he was in it and he played the quads and he taught me some stuff," Batbaran said. "He didn’t die for no reason, he touched me and he touched a lot of other people."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
