Students Get High, Then Sick Off Cough Medicine

Hialeah Middle School teens taken to hospital after ingesting decongestant

As many as a dozen Hialeah Middle School students were transported to the hospital Tuesday after they became sick at school after ingesting an over the counter decongestant, authorities said.

Several ambulances and other rescue trucks responded to the school at 6027 E. 7th Ave. early this morning. Fire Rescue workers were seen carrying students out in their arms and on gurneys to the ambulances from the school building.

The students included six girls and five boys, all between the ages of 13 and 14, according to Lt. Cesar Espinosa, with Hialeah Fire Rescue.

According to Lt. Espinosa, the students took Coricidin, a cough suppressant. When used as a recreational drug, Coricidin is called "Red Devils," "Skittles" or "C's," and can be highly dangerous.

The students were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital and Palmetto General Hospital. Their symptoms and conditions are unknown.

School board officials said that they are still investigating what happened but suspensions may be on the way for some of the students.
