11-Year-Old South Florida Cancer Survivor Gets Surprise From Ellen DeGeneres

A South Florida girl got the surprise of a lifetime thanks to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on Monday.

During a taping of her talk show, DeGeneres brought 11-year-old Veronica Avila from Coconut Creek on set. Four years ago, Avila was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. After a year of aggressive treatment, she was declared cancer free – and said that watching Ellen’s show kept her positive throughout her treatment.

Veronica was recently honored by the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation for her bravery during her fight against cancer – even making a video asking DeGeneres to be her date for the event.

During Monday’s taping, Ellen gave Avila an Apple laptop computer and $10,000 to put toward her education – as the youngster hopes to one day become a surgeon and help others in need.

Watch Veronica on Tuesday’s episode of Ellen at 3 p.m. on NBC 6 followed by the NBC 6 News at 4.
