Man Allegedly Burned Down Building Over $5

Authorities arrest man for allegedly throwing Molotov into neighbor's unit

Authorities said a fight between neighbors in Coconut Grove erupted in a blaze, literally.

Oscar Cairo, 38, was arrested Sunday for allegedly tossing a Molotov cocktail into his neighbor’s bedroom window after the man tried to get back the $5 Cairo borrowed earlier in the day, Miami Police said.

The ensuing inferno eventually engulfed much of the apartment building at 3375 Grand Ave. and many of the tenants had to be evacuated.

Cairo is charged with four counts of attempted murder and arson and is being held in jail on no bond, a judge ruled Monday.

About 100 people from the building were displaced, authorities said.

Dominique Hunt told police he was sitting in his bedroom Sunday morning when Cairo tossed the explosive through his window. When it hit the ground it exploded and then the whole bedroom was engulfed in flames, a police report stated.

Hunt claims he gave Cairo $5, but when he saw his neighbor counting a wad of cash later in the day, he asked for it back, the report said. Hunt said he snatched the money out of Cairo's hands and went back to his apartment.

Moments later, the Molotov cocktail was thrown, police said. Hunt was home with his sister and two small children, the report stated.

Authorities extinguished the flames quickly, and no one was injured.
