14-Year-Old Hacked With Machete In Street Brawl

The teenager is in stable condition at Broward General

What is it with South Florida and machetes?

A 14-year-old boy was airlifted to to hospital after being struck with one repeatedly in a North Lauderdale street brawl Friday night.

As many as 50 young people were involved in the scrum, which a witness said started when a car pulled up to a house party in the 7600 block of Southwest 10th Street and several teens leapt out and began fighting.

It isn't known who attacked the boy with a machete, or why.

"We are still looking for a suspect because so many people were there and detectives have a lot of witnesses to interview,'' said Broward Sherrifs Office spokesperson Dani Moschella.

One teenager was questioned by police Friday night, but cleared and released. The boy is in stable condition, with non-life-threatening lacerations.

Earlier this year, a West Palm Beach man was arrested for beating his children with the broad side of a machete. In June of last year, a Fort Lauderdale woman was left in critical condition by her boyfriend, who used a machete to chop off several of her fingers and stab her repeatedly, and a few days later Miami police killed a man weilding a machete near the Miami-Dade County Jail.
