A 17-year-old accused of helping a woman kidnap her children from a foster home in Southwest Miami-Dade before shooting that foster mother appeared in a Mimi courtroom Thursday.
The male teen, whose name has not been released, was charged with several counts including attempted murder with a deadly weapon. A Miami-Dade judge ruled the teen remain in custody until prosecutors can decide whether he should be charged as an adult by a September 25th hearing.
Officials say the teen helped 34-year-old Candi Johnson go to the Richmond Heights home last Friday of 77-year-old Wendy Edmond, shooting her before taking Johnson’s two biological children – a 2-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl.
The children were later found with Johnson in a Miami home while Edmond was hospitalized in stable condition.
Johnson was ordered to be held without bond during a Sunday hearing and will be required to stay away from Edmond and her children if she should get a later bond.
The children were placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
