18-Wheeler in Hit-and-Run Crash in Miami Gardens

Corvette destroyed in early morning crash

A South Florida man says he's lucky to be alive after walking away from a hit-and-run crash that smashed his Corvette early Monday morning in Miami Gardens.

Joe Amunategui says he was driving eastbound on 826 just past Northwest 27th Avenue around 2 a.m. when an 18-wheeler hit him and drove over his car.

"He came up real close and as he was swerving to go around me, he clipped the back of my corvette and spun me into the wall," Amunategui said. "I'm lucky to be alive right now...I took a pretty good shot."

According to Amunategui, the tractor trailer driver ran over part of his car and took off. He says a North Miami Beach officer saw what happened and called for help.

Amunategui said he felt a little dizzy and would probably need some X-rays.

"It's not the way I wanted to end my night," he said.

Police are investigating the incident.
