Thelma Harris, the first African-American woman to serve as an officer with the Miami-Dade Police Department, has died.
Harris began her service with MDPD in June of 1962. She worked for the Department for 20 years before retiring in 1982.
She worked various assignments during her two decades of service, including community service and juvenile investigations.
Funeral services for Officer Harris were held Wednesday at the Mt. Herman A.M.E. Church in Miami Gardens.
