2 Arrested After Shoplifting Incident Leads to Chase: MDPD

An alleged shoplifting incident ended with a police pursuit. After the chase, the car ended up on fire and two people were taken into custody.

It was a smokey end to a three-part incident caught on camera.

Police said moments before a vehicle caught fire outside a west Miami-Dade home, the occupants, 21-year-old Jeanette Miranda and 29-year-old Zuraby Gonzalez, were allegedly shoplifting at Kmart blocks away.

One shopper said she saw Gonzalez throwing clothes on the floor, stepping on it, and then sticking it in a bag.

"They struck the security guard who attempted to stop them," said Major Jesus Ramirez with Miami-Dade Police.

According to investigators, aside from hitting that security guard with their car, Gonzalez punched another Kmart employee inside the store. A police officer witnessed the incident and then followed the vehicle.

"On their way here, they struck another vehicle off of Southwest 6th Street and 136th Avenue," Ramirez said.

Edwin Delgado and his wife were walking nearby when suddenly they heard a loud screeching sound, "The car almost hit us, got up on the side walk, then got back on the road and noticed he was dragging a mattress. A big mattress."

That mattress now burned and sitting on the front yard of the home where all of this came to a boil. Police arrested Gonzalez and Miranda, and the vehicle at the center of the ordeal was towed with severe damage.

Police said no serious injuries were reported. Both Kmart employees were treated on the scene.
