3 Dead, 1 Injured After Car Plunges Into Lauderhill Canal: Police

Three people were killed and a fourth person was injured after a car plunged into a canal in Lauderhill Sunday night.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 44th Street and Inverrary Boulevard in Lauderhill.

Lauderhill Fire Rescue teams say there were four passengers in the car when it plunged into the canal and became submerged in the water. One person, the driver, was able to swim to safety, while dive teams pulled the other three passengers from the submerged vehicle.

When fire rescue crews arrived they were met by 24-year-old DeShawn Prince, the driver of the vehicle, who told them the car was submerged.

The passengers were taken to area hospitals where two of them died. The third person, described as a 15-year-old boy, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

Prince was taken to Florida Medical Center where his condition was unknown.

"The driver has been cooperating, he’s been in constant contact with my investigators and has been throughout the investigation so we have no issues on his cooperation," Lauderhill Police Lt. Greg Solowsky said.

The victims were later identified as 22-year-old Shaquille Barrows and 25-year-old Nathaniel Morgan. The teen's identity wasn't released.

"The driver's actions in and of themselves indicate there was a clear attempt to help the passengers inside the car because when our fire and rescue partners arrived at the scene he was screaming and yelling there was people inside the car," Solowsky said.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the crash and has information to please contact police.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

"We’re not ruling out anything, whether the driver was possibly run off the road, whether it was driver error, none of that has been ruled out," Solowsky said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
