2 Elderly People Rescued From Fort Lauderdale Apartment Fire

Two elderly people were rescued from an apartment fire in Fort Lauderdale Sunday, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the apartment at 1115 Southwest 15th Terrace Sunday afternoon and found heavy smoke and fire coming from a first floor unit, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Timothy Heiser said.

The firefighters were able to carry the two elderly victims down to safety from the second floor. The fire was quickly extinguished, Heiser said.

A 17-year-old suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital but was expected to be released Monday, Heiser said. Three adults and five children were displaced by the fire and are in the care of the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
