Small Child Found in Canal in Coral Springs Dies, 2nd Hospitalized

A young boy died and his sister was hospitalized after they were found in a canal in Coral Springs Wednesday, officials said.

The children, a 3-year-old boy and his 2-year-old sister, were spotted in the water in the area of 8500 Northwest 40th Street, according to Coral Springs Fire Rescue.

Aerial images show the small body of water which appears to be a canal located behind an apartment complex.

The children were transported to Broward Health Coral Springs. The boy was taken in critical condition but later died, fire rescue officials said. His sister was transported as a precaution, according to officials.

The identities of the children haven't been released.

A neighbor said she saw the kids' mother shortly after the incident.

"I just see her drop to the floor saying 'my baby, my baby,'" Seleena Aranguren said."I felt so bad, so incredibly bad."

According to police, the mother noticed her sliding door open. When she went to look outside, she was terrified to see her two kids in the canal. Officials said it was a tragic accident that could have been avoided.

"If your child is old enough to learn how to swim they should learn how to swim. If your child is too young to learn how to swim make sure they are secure and being watched at all times," Coral Springs Fire Division Chief Mike Moser said.
